Depending on God to Keep My Salvation

2 Timothy1:8-12 (HCSB)

8 So don’t be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, or of me His prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God.9 He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus
before time began. 10 This has now been made evident through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who has abolished death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

11 For this gospel I was appointed a herald, apostle, and teacher, 12 and that is why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know the One I have believed in and am persuaded that He is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.

v 8 So don’t be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, or of me His prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God.

  1. MY SALVATION COMES BY THE POWER OF GOD
  • Following Christ can bring suffering.
  • We are saved by His power not by ours.
  1. MY SALVATION IS NOT BASED ON MY WORKS

v 9 He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.

  • We are saved by the work of God, not by our works.
  • Our salvation comes as a part of His purpose and grace.

Ephesians 2:8–9 (HCSB)

For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift – 9 not from works, so that no one can boast.

  1. MY SALVATION IS PRESENT BECAUSE OF HIS ATONEMENT

v 10 This has now been made evident through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who has abolished death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

  • Christ came to provide a way for us to go to heaven.
  • Christ overcame sin and death to give us eternal life.

Romans 5:8 (HCSB)

But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!

  1. MY SALVATION IS SECURE BECAUSE HE GUARDS IT

vv 11-12 For this gospel I was appointed a herald, apostle, and teacher, 12 and that is why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know the One I have believed in and am persuaded that He is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.

  • Christ has the power to secure and guard our salvation.
  • Our salvation is secure because He has sealed

Ephesians 1:13 (HCSB)

When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

  • Our salvation is secure because nothing can separate us from Him.

Romans 8:38–39 (HCSB)

For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, 39 height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!

  • Our salvation is secure because He holds on to us.

John 10:27–30 (HCSB)

“My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish – ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”

During times of uncertainty, we may begin to doubt our salvation. But since we had nothing to do with attaining it, it is not secured by our ability but rather Christ’s ability to give it and secure it.
