Sermon Series:  Objections
God is not Real

Selected Passages (HCSB)

Common Objection:  I don’t believe God exists.  How can anybody know for sure?

Two categories of those who have this objection:

  • Atheists—there is no God
  • Agnostics—we cannot know for sure if there is a God or not

Psalm 14:1 (See also Psalm 53:1)

The fool says in his heart, “God does not exist.”

James 2:19

You believe that God is one; you do well. The demons also believe – and they shudder.

HOW CAN WE KNOW THAT GOD IS REAL?

  1. Every Cause Has an Effect

John 1:1-2

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.

  1. Every Creation Has a Creator

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 2:4

These are the records of the heavens and the earth, concerning their creation at the time that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

  1. Every Design Has a Designer

Psalm 90:2

Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God.

  1. Every Law Has a Lawgiver

Deuteronomy 5:22

“The LORD spoke these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly from the fire, cloud, and thick darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. He wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.”

GOD PROVES HIMSELF THROUGH:

  • Creation

Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands.

  • Conscience

Romans 1:18–20

For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, 19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.

Romans 2:12–16

All those who sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all those who sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For the hearers of the law are not righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be declared righteous. 14 So, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, instinctively do what the law demands, they are a law to themselves even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts. Their consciences confirm this. Their competing thoughts will either accuse or excuse them 16 on the day when God judges what people have kept secret, according to my gospel through Christ Jesus.

Acts 17:27

He did this so they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.

  • Scripture

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness…

  • Savior

John 1:14

The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
