The Key to Humility

1 Peter 5:5–7 (HCSB)

5 In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you.

1. HUMBLE PEOPLE RECOGNIZE AND HONOR
v 5a “In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders…”

  • Truly humble people submit to leadership.
  • Genuine humility allows us to recognize the gift of leadership.

2. HUMBLE PEOPLE PRACTICE A SPIRIT OF HUMILITY TOWARD OTHERS.

v 5b “…And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

  • Being “clothed” in humility means it has become a part of who we are.
  • Being humble toward others lets us be more Christ-like.

Philippians 2:3–7 (HCSB)

3 Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. 4 Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. 7 Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form…

3. HUMBLE PEOPLE KNOW THEIR PLACE BEFORE GOD.

v 6a “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God…”

  • Living humbly means we know where we stand before God.
  • Understanding the power of God helps our humility.

4. HUMBLE PEOPLE WILL ULTIMATELY BE EXALTED.

vv 6b-7 “…so that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you.”

  • We don’t choose humility to be exalted, it is the natural outcome.
  • It’s one of the paradoxes of the Christian life.

Matthew 18:4 (HCSB)

4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child – this one is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

The key to humility is understanding our place before God. From there we can gain a proper attitude about our relationship with others and maintain a humble heart as we relate to them.
